1960 Eisenhower State Visit

President Eisenhower paid a state visit to the Philippines on June 14 to 16, 1960, returning the visit of President Garcia to Washington two years earlier. He was the first U.S. president to visit the Philippines while in office.

While in the Philippines, President Eisenhower recalled his personal association with the Philippines extending over a period of many years. When MacArthur went to the Philippines as military adviser to the government of the Commonwealth in 1935, he took Eisenhower along as his assistant. For the next four years Eisenhower helped to create the defences of the islands, returning to the United States at the end of 1939.

A set of two stamps marking the state visit was issued later in the year on December 30, 1960. The stamps printed by the Government Printing Bureau of Japan show Presidents Eisenhower and Garcia shaking hands.
