1961 2nd National Boy Scout Jamboree

The 2nd National Boy Scout Jamboree was held May 2 -8, 1961 at  Pasonanca Park, Zamboanga., excellent photographs of which can be seen at Bill Fabianik's web siteThe 1st National Boy Scout Jamboree  had been held in April, 1954.

The 1959 10th World Jamboree regular semi-postal stamps were overprinted to mark the 1961 Jamboree. The stamps were issued on opening day, May 2, 1961. Two paper types were used to print the original stamps. Individual stamps were printed on yellow-tinted paper while tete-beche sheets were printed on white paper. Both types were overprinted and surcharged.

1961 Antonio Luna Surcharge : Recapture of Corregidor

Corregidor Island located at the entrance of Manila Bay was captured by Japanese forces in May, 1942. The Battle for the Recapture of Corregidor, February 16-26, 1945, resulted in the American/Filipino liberation of the island.

The Bureau of Posts issued a surcharged Antonio Luna definitive stamp on February 16, 1961, marking the  16th anniversary of the recapture of Corregidor.

The 25c definitive stamp was surcharged to 20c, without reference to the recapture of Corregidor.

1961 Manila Postal Conference

The 1961 Manila Postal Conference,  held in Manila  from January 10 to 23, 1961, resulted in the Asian Oceanic Postal Convention ("Convention") which was signed by representatives of Australia, China, Korea, New Zealand, Philippines and Thailand. The Convention came into force on April 1, 1962 with four countries forming a postal union, namely, China, Korea, Philippines and Thailand. The Convention now called the Asian Pacific Postal Union is today an inter-governmental organization of 32 Asian Pacific region postal postal administrations.


 The Manila Postal Conference was held at the W.H.O. building in Manila, shown in the above post card.

A set of two stamps, one regular and one air mail, were issued to mark the Conference on January 23, 1961.
