1954 Centenary of First Philippine Stamp



On April 25, 1954, the Bureau of Post issued a set of six stamps, three regular and three air mail, to commemorate the centenary of the first Philippine stamp. The stamps, beautifully engraved by the English firm of De la Rue, feature the Queen Isabella II stamp which was issued in 1854.

1954 First National Boy Scouts Jamboree

The first National Boy Scouts Jamboree was held in Balara, Quezon City, April 23-30, 1954. Over 5000 boys attended with almost 200 coming from 11 foreign countries.

Stamps

Two stamps were overprinted to commemorate the first national Boy Scout Jamboree and issued on April 23, 1954, the first day of the Jamboree

1) The 5c Marcelo del Pilar definitive stamp was overprinted.

 


 



2) The 50c "Colonnade of Palm Trees" definitive was surcharged 18c and overprinted.

On January 2, 1935, Brigadier General Basilio J. Valdes formally organized the Philippine Constabulary Air Corps to provide reconnaissance support  for the Philippine Constabulary. On December 23, the National Defense Act of 1935 provided for the creation of the Philippine Army, which was to be composed of the Philippine Constabulary. The Constabulary Air Corps became the Philippine Army Air Corps.

In the Presidential elections held  November 10, 1953, Defense Secretary Ramon Magsaysay defeated incumbent President Elpidio Quirino. Magsaysay's running mate Carlos Garcia was elected vice-president. Inauguration ceremonies were held on December 30, 1953.
