1957 President Ramon Magsasay

On March 17, 1957 President Ramon Magsaysay was killed in a plane crash on Mt. Manunggal, Cebu. An estimated 5 million people attended Magsaysay's burial on March 31, 1957. Vice-President Carlos Garcia assumed the presidency to serve out the last eight months of Magsaysay's term.

A memorial stamp for President Magsaysay was issued on August 31, 1957, the 50th anniversary of his birth. The Magsaysay stamp was printed by the American Bank Note. Co.

United States Magsaysay Commemorative Stamp

On August 31, 1957, the United States issued a stamp commemorating President Magsaysay, the first in a series honoring foreign "Champions of Liberty".

1957 Juan Luna

Juan Luna was a  Filipino artist of the late 19th century who achieved success in Spain with his paintings. 


 Spoliarium (1884)

The Bureau of Posts issued a commemorative stamp on October 23 , 1957, the centenary of Luna's birth. The stamp features Luna's painting Spoliarium  which depicts a chamber beneath a Roman arena, where bodies of dead gladiators are being dragged.

1957 50th Anniversary of the First Philippine Assembly

The Philippine Assembly was the legislative body of the Philippines during the early phase of U.S.colonial administration from 1907 to 1916. It served as the elected lower house of the legislature with the appointed Philippines Commission as the upper house. Following the elections held on July 30, 1907, the Philippine Assembly was convened at the old Manila Grand Opera House on October 16, 1907.

Sergia Osmena, leader of the majority Nacionalista party, became speaker and held that position until 1916 when the Philippines Assembly was abolished and the Philippine Legislature consisting of the Senate and House of Representatives was established.

On October 16, 1957, the 50th Anniversary of the Philippine Assembly was marked with the release of a commemorative stamp featuring seated members of the Assembly and a vignette of Speaker Osmena.
